How to buy exchange-traded funds (ETFs)

Your path to investing in an exchange-traded fund (ETF). Let’s briefly review some basic information about investing in ETFs – where and when they’re traded, and how to find the right fund.

Key takeaways:

Where and when ETFs are traded

ETFs are traded on stock markets around the world. Just like individual stocks, you can buy units in an ETF whenever the exchange is open. Credit Suisse Index Solutions ETFs are traded every business day on the following exchanges:

Finding an ETF

To identify the right ETF for you, visit the Our funds page for access to all of our ETFs, as well as our index mutual funds (see ETFs vs Index mutual funds for more information on the differences between these fund types).

If you decide to buy an ETF through an online platform, the easiest way to find it will be to search for the fund using its ISIN – International Securities Identification Number, a 12-digit code that is universally recognized for trading purposes. See the example on the right with the ISIN highlighted:

What you need to trade

To start trading ETFs, you need to have an account with funds deposited. This account can be with your bank, with an online service, or managed by a financial advisor. Such an account is usually simple to open, but please be sure to carefully review the terms and conditions of your selected provider.

1. Buying ETFs through your bank

Do you have a safekeeping account with Credit Suisse or another bank that offers access to ETFs? If you do, you can easily trade ETFs via your e-banking account. If you prefer the more human touch, speak to your banking relationship manager, who will be happy to help you get started making trades – just send the fund details to your relationship manager via email.

And if you’re not a Credit Suisse client yet, maybe it’s time to consider opening an account with us.

2. Buying ETFs via an online service

Buying an ETF through an online service is a comfortable way to trade from your home, office, or even on your mobile while riding the train. Brokers such as Swissquote also offer simple ways to buy and sell ETFs.

3. Financial advisor

If you have a financial advisor that you trust, reach out to them and ask how they can help you invest your money in a Credit Suisse Index Solutions ETF.

A word about costs

ETFs are a cost-efficient option for investors. There are two main types of costs of ETFs to keep in mind:

  • Transaction fees
  • Management fees

Transaction fees for buying and selling ETFs depend on the platform you use, but trades are generally quite inexpensive. There may also be country-specific taxes imposed on ETF transactions – for example, in Switzerland, every transaction involving the purchase and sale of an ETF is subject to a stamp duty.

Management fees, also called “ongoing charges”, are given as a percentage – this represents the fees charged over a year, which pay for the expenses of maintaining the fund. Ongoing charges for our ETFs are typically within a range of 0.09%–0.25% per year.
